(PLEASE NOTE: The Web build is my first time building something like this and was also made after I started working on some graphical updates. While I tried to revert all the changes (it was only to one room), please bear that in mind when doing your judging.)

Z to Shoot, X to Jump.

A game made for the Retrograde 2 Jam, in 2021.

I was inspired heavily by Metroid for this one, and honestly the original idea for the game has been kicking around since...probably 2011/2012. I just remember working on it during class with @ganbariley when we were supposed to be working on Social Studies. Back then though, we were gonna try to make a game like Hero Core by Daniel Remar at the time.

Since then the idea evolved and sadly what I have for you here is... well calling it a shadow of the idea would be generous.

Sub-Terra has a lot more meat to the idea than I presented here. Maybe by the time I actually sit down with it, I'll know which parts to cut and which to keep, but for now the entire bloated thing lives in my head. Some of the stuff that exists in the mind version:

  • A timer, to allow the ending to shift based on how long it took (and possibly force an end game state if you took too long
  • Factions, who provide different weapons, and hopefully playstyles, and would also affect the ending
  • Multiple weapons beyond the basic blaster. Which was supposed to be a pistol.
  • Co-op???
  • An actual story, as compared to me just throwing you into the caves here.

Unfortunately, I ran out of time and energy to work on this, as I had started a new job right at the start of the Jam, hah. So it will cut off abruptly, and it's probably buggy and unpolished. But I gotta call it here for my own sanity.

It's rather sluggish, but checking the webconsole shows that something keeps reporting "1" to it and I know from personal experience that that might easily be the cause of the rest lagging behind.

Hm wasn't sluggish to me but I have a feeling I know what it is, I was having some problems with the music player  early on and probably forgot to remove the messages.

I'll remove those when I get back from work tonight, if you want to give it another shot after that.

Ok, I'm sorry that took me so long for such a small thing.

If you're willing to, could you try the web version again and see if removing those debug messages helped any?

yes.
